To demonstrate the drawbacks of comparing reproductions lets take a closer look at a picture of the painting "Peat boat with two figures". At first instance this painting looks very 'flat' with very little impasto. But what do we see when we compare the reproduction with an old black & white photo of the painting? In the b&w photo the thickness of the paint can be seen much better.
